STUDY HALL COURSES:
Grace Byron’s “Reporting On Politics 101”
Reporting on local and national politics can feel opaque to those who have yet to crack the code. Perhaps more than even culture writing, politics requires knowledge of a specific, technical kind of language. In this class, Grace Byron will guide you on how to generate ideas, find outlets, and use the lingo that veteran politics reporters and editors use when building a story. From interviewing subjects, write-arounds, and opinion pieces, you will analyze a few pitches and stories to get a better sense of how to get started. You'll leave this one-hour class feeling prepared to start your political reporting journey and hopefully have a few ideas of how to get tips and pitch new editors.
Grace’s work has appeared in The New Yorker, Vogue, and The Nation. The 1.5 hour course will take place August 17th 10 AM PDT. Sign up.
Lux Alptraum’s Beginner’s Guide to Covering the Sex Industry
Sex work seems to be everywhere these days. Storylines about sex workers have popped up in shows like Euphoria, Margo’s Got Money Troubles, and Hacks. Yet even as OnlyFans has become a household name, few journalists actually understand the inner workings of this often underground industry — or how to build trust that’s needed to get sex worker sources to open up about these stories.
In this course, Lux Alptraum, an adult industry expert and one-time editor of the porn blog Fleshbot, will walk you through the basics of reporting on the sex industry. In addition to providing an overview of the different corners of the sex industry, she’ll also explain why so many sex workers do not trust journalists, and walk participants through the best practices for covering adult industry-related topics. The 1.5 hour course will take place August 14th at 10 AM PDT/ 1 PM ET. Sign up.
