This panel will touch upon how legacy media outlets are coming up with AI rules, and what writers can do to protect their work. In addition, the panelists will discuss larger questions about how AI has changed the industry: Is it possible to integrate these tools in a workflow without plagiarizing other writers' work? Is there a double standard of media outlets banning freelancers from using these tools, while editors use in-house AI tools? What does it mean to have original prose in a time when LLMs can mimic style?

Reporting on local and national politics can feel opaque to those who have yet to crack the code. Perhaps more than even culture writing, politics requires knowledge of a specific, technical kind of language. In this class, Grace Byron will guide you on how to generate ideas, find outlets, and use the lingo that veteran politics reporters and editors use when building a story. From interviewing subjects, write-arounds, and opinion pieces, you will analyze a few pitches and stories to get a better sense of how to get started. Candidates should have at least two years of experience, a strong portfolio, and the ability to work on tight deadlines. The rate is $21-$25 per hour for news and $0.08-$0.10 per word for features.

 -The Texas Signal shared with Study Hall that they are calling for pitches of stories focused on Texas about education, politics, healthcare, culture, and the environment from new and experienced journalists.  -MS NOW is hiring a Writing Associate Producer based in NYC for The Moment with Katy Tur, a weekday political talk show airing from 2PM - 4PM. They will research and write daily segments, determine video and sound elements, and pitch story ideas. Candidates should have at least two years of journalism experience, strong research skills, and knowledge of American politics and global news. The salary range is $75,000 - $80,000.

 -The Wall Street Journal is hiring a Lead Writer, Live Markets based in NYC to anchor real-time coverage of major market events and global finance. They will lead live-blog coverage of market shifts, synthesize breaking news with reporters across global bureaus, and help shape the voice and strategy of the Live Markets blog. Candidates should have five years of financial journalism experience, a track record of covering markets under deadline pressure, and deep comfort navigating complex financial data. The salary range is $140,000 to $175,000, and this is a union position.

 -Newsweek is hiring a US News Reporter based in the UK to produce fast, accurate, and original coverage of US politics, current affairs, and culture for an American audience. They will pitch and produce multiple articles daily, respond to breaking news, and integrate multimedia elements. Candidates should have experience in a fast-paced digital newsroom covering US news, a detailed knowledge of US trends, and the ability to work to tight deadlines. The salary is £25,000 per annum, and this is a casual position.
