Opportunities

-SFGate's editor-in-chief, Grant Marek, is always looking for pitches of “stories from people who REALLY understand the Bay Area.” He wants pitches that no one else has thought to chase, people no one has ever thought to highlight before, stories that perfectly capture the spirit and history of a California treasure, and finally, angles “that remind people it's not all Doom Loop here in the Bay Area.” Rates range from $200-$400+.

-Block Club Chicago's Arts & Culture editor, Gwen Ihnat, is always looking for pitches on “Chicago music, theater, exhibits, books, comics etc. — from every neighborhood.” The rates weren't given, but previously started at $150. Send arts and culture pitches to [email protected] (or use the buttons below). You can also email [email protected] with pitches for other sections.

-Epicenter NYC is hiring a freelance contributor to cover “education issues with a focus on utility stories and innovative engagement.” Candidates should have proven experience in journalism, particularly covering education or related issues. “Proficiency in Spanish or other languages is highly preferred.” The rate is around $1,000 monthly, and the “expected output is the equivalent of two reported or explanatory pieces per week.” Apply through their Airtable form.

-Nieman Reports is still hiring an editor based in Cambridge, MA, to direct “a team of internal and external journalists and creatives, identifying and assigning stories and other content that will inform and fortify journalists in their work.” The editor will be responsible for a $500,000 budget. Candidates should have at least seven years of experience in editing and supervising a team, including “advanced knowledge of editing in a specialized field, with digital as well as print media, including managing the print production process.” According to Salary Grade 058, the salary range is $87,700- $150,900. The role was first listed in October but has recently been reshared.

-The Maine Monitor is hiring an Education & Workforce Development reporter based in Maine to “report outstanding journalism on critical issues in Maine, with a particular focus on education and career preparation, from pre-school to vocational programs to graduate school.” Candidates should have a track record of producing impactful in-depth or investigative stories. They must be able to get “reluctant sources to talk candidly and [have] a deft touch with people who have experienced trauma.” The salary range is $48,000 – $52,000. The role requires “travel for in-person story research and interviews and occasional visits to our office in Augusta.”
