Opportunities
-The Food Section's founding editor, Hanna Raskin, is always looking for pitches of reported stories on “culinary news and culture across the South.” They want reportage “on the joys of dining, and justice for those who make such pleasures possible.” Stories must unfold in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, or West Virginia (or the northernmost reaches of Florida). The rate is currently $1,058.16 for around 1,200 words. Send pitches through their pitch form.
- The Guardian US' head of narrative, Jessica Reed, is always looking for pitches of “long form narratives [an arc! a story! characters! intrigue!]; essays [searing, searching, funny]; stories about gray areas and hard choices; people that give us hope; a sense of place.” The rates weren't given but reportedly ranged from $600-$1,000 in 2022. The word count is still around 5,000. Send pitches to [email protected].
-Public Books' TV editor, Sarah Rebecca Kessler, is always looking for pitches of “anything good about TV.” “I prefer stuff that really thinks about the medium in its specificity, incorporating audiovisual and/or industry analysis rather than only thinking about narrative or genre (though I love things that incorporate all of the above!).” The rate is $150 “to folks not in secure academic positions (aka also to anyone who’s not a professor).” Send pitches to [email protected] with “PITCH” in the subject line.
-The Atlantic is hiring a staff writer based in NYC or Washington, DC, to helm its flagship newsletter, The Daily. “You will be responsible for driving the conversation on news of the day with original pieces of analysis and reporting that will anchor two or three editions of the newsletter each week.” Candidates should have at least five years of experience covering the news as a writer or reporter and a “deep interest in newsletters and the competitive field.” The salary range is $100,000-$175,000, and “this position will at times include night, early-morning, and weekend work.”
-Noema Magazine is hiring a senior editor based in Los Angeles to oversee digital and print content. They will “commission primarily essays (many longform) — but also interviews and reportage — on policy, climate change, economics, technology, culture, philosophy and geopolitics.” Candidates should have at least five years of experience as an editor or reporter. The salary range is $125,000-$160,000. To apply, send a cover letter and resume to [email protected].
